Pediatricians can set an example for patients and families by working to make their offices more environmentally friendly, produce less waste, save money and help protect the planet.  The road to a green office does not have to be an onerous one, as there are organizations and websites that can aid in the transition. MyGreenDoctor.org is a project of the Florida Medical Association in conjunction with other like-minded professional organizations. It offers a free certification process and has a wealth of information that will aid practices in going green. PracticeGreenhealth.org is geared to help hospitals and large healthcare organizations work towards sustainability and cost savings as they improve their environmental stewardship.

Tips to Help Green the Office

  • Switch to environmentally friendly chemicals and cleaning solutions. The Environmental Working Group (EWG.ORG) lists and rates cleaning solutions for the home and workplace.

  • Save money and brighten the workplace by replacing fluorescent lighting with LEDs.  Many utilities have rebate programs to aid in the transition and will conduct a free energy audit.

  • Think before you print and and recycle whatever paper you can.  Place recycle bins around the office. Purchase products made from recycled paper. Work towards a paperless office.

  • Shut down electronics at night. Doing so will save electricity by decreasing the “phantom load”.

  • Buy Energy Star certified equipment whenever possible.

  • Use tap water or purchase a water cooler to avoid the use of single use plastic bottles.

  • When looking at new office space, consider proximity to and availability of public transportation.

  • Recycle, recycle, recycle whatever you can and discuss the issue with your waste management company.  Many print and laser cartridges  can be returned for credit and/or recycling.

  • Use programmable thermostats to reduce energy use.

  • Dispose of pharmaceuticals properly and encourage patients to do the same.

  • Replace paper towels in restrooms with electric hand dryers.

  • As mercury-containing medical equipment ages, replace it with more modern alternatives. Dispose of mercury properly. Call your local government or go to earth911.com to find recyclers.
